An incomplete cast lead alloy seal matrix of medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1400. The seal is a pointed oval or vessica shape with the remains of a perforated lug set at one end in the centre of the reverse. Just over half of the seal survives. It may have been broken deliberately to decommission it. The reverse is decorated with a moulded fleur de lis, with the handle lug at the base. The front face bears a central motif of a cross surmounting a long, pointed oval object, surrounded by the legend "+S'HE[...]I.LES" probably representing a personal seal of an individual. The impression would be the right way up if the handle lug was placed at the top when using the matrix. The metal is a mid grey colour and is worn and patinated. It is 20.5mm long, 16mm wide and 3.8mm thick. 4.5g.
