Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete Roman copper alloy Colchester Derivative brooch of Mackreth's (2011) Type CD Ha dating to the period c. AD 43 - 100. The lower bow, foot and catchplate are missing.

The head exhibits a double pierced lug which houses the axis bar and chord of the bilateral spring. Eight loops remain, three on the right and five on the left. The width of the spring is narrower than the width of the wings, indicating it may be a replacement. The chord passes through the top piercing of the lug. The iron axis bar passes through the bottom piercing. The C-shaped wings are curved to seat the spring. Each is decorated with a single longitudnial groove at the tip and a moulded ridge at the junction with the bow. The bow tapers to an old break.
