An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy spherical-headed pin (700-900).
The tip of the shaft is missing.
The head is slightly flattened at the top and on the four sides and the underside is an inverted cone shape. It has five ring-and-dot motifs, one at the top and one on each main side. Between the head and shaft there is a small collar, 1.5mm in diameter at the top and 1.1mm at the break.
This pin is green and has patches of a darker green patina.
Length: 37.0mm; width of head: 6.4mm; thickness of head: 6.4mm; height of head: 7.0mm. Weight: 1.97g.
The presence of a collar suggests this pin is Saxon rather than Roman (Geake 2001:38).
The design is typically Middle Anglo-Saxon and there are close parallels from the Hamwic site at Southampton (Hinton 1996: p. 20, nos. 24/24, 31/672 and 32/420).
