A Medieval copper alloy strap fitting in the form of a swivel dating to circa AD 1100-1300.

The swivel is circular in plan and oval in profile, with a square sectioned copper alloy arm projecting from the centre of each of the sides. Both of the arms are broadly square in plan, with rounded corners at the ends terminals. The bar is slightly narrowed as it passes through the rounded swivel. The arms then expand to the terminals which are pierced with circular incisions.

The body of the swivel is decorated with a repeatign pattern of recessed lines which are placed at a diagonal angle across the object. Around the circumference of the swivel around the point where the bosy meets the arms at the perforation the decoration is in the form of two circumferential rows that are decorated with a repeating pattern of a series of incisions. The swivel has a well developed green coloured patina across all surfaces.

Egan (1998, p:296) describes chain swivels as leads for pets and also to suspend cooking pots over the fire. There are parallels recorded on the PAS database, notably WMID-FEEEA7 discovered in Warwickshire which is of a similar form and WAW-E50A69 of a similar dating discovered in Worcestershire which is more elaborately decorated.

The swivel is 39.4 mm long from end to end of the arms, and it has a maximum diameter of 26.7 mm. The swivel weighs 30.3 grams.
