An incomplete cast copper alloy crotal bell dating to the early post-medieval period (AD1500-1700). The crotal bell is made in one piece but has a filed girth seam intended to imitate the seam on earlier two-piece bells. The bell has an integrally cast square suspension loop and the lower sounding holes and split are filled with earth. Both the upper and lower hemispheres of the bell is decorated with the popular 'sunburst' design formed of nine double 'rays' decorated by a central longitudinal incised line. The founders' mark of a horseshoe symbol can be seen on the underside of the bell but it is uncertain to which foundary or maker this mark belongs to. This distinguishing mark helps date this crotal tentatively to the 16th or 17th centuries (Bailey 1995, 39-40; refs. 4, 5).
