FINGER RING

Unique ID: NARC-72CC7A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy Finger Ring of Medieval date (AD 1150-1450). The object is a stirrup-shaped finger-ring with a plain hoop. The hoop is D-shaped in cross section, expanding to a triangular bezel. At the top of the bezel is an ovate void which would have contained a glass or paste knop, which is now missing.

The hoop has a slightly distorted plan, most probably due to post depositional processes.

Height: 21.82mm, Height (of bezel): 4.53mm, Width: 21.37mm, Thickness: 1.38mm, Wight: 1.1g.

The metal is a dark green in colour with a predominantly smooth patina.

According to Frances Pritchard (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 326) these stirrup-shaped rings were 'popular in England from the middle of 12th century for at least three-hundred years'.
HAMP-0F7D96 also has a circular knop at the top of the bezel and it is suggested this is possibly a 'false setting', representative of a gemstone.
