STRAP END

Unique ID: SF-4E0294

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A mostly complete cast copper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. Formed of two separate plates secured at its upper edge and directly above the terminal by means of a single circular-sectioned copper alloy rivet (giving a total of two), it has a sub-rectangular body with gently tapering sides that terminates in a projecting floral knop. The outer face of the strap end is decorated at its upper edge by means of engraving, consisting a saltire motif followed by two transverse grooves. Despite now curving somewhat in profile due to post-depositional damage, it is preserved in good condition with an even green ish patina. It measures 40.54mm in length, 9.16mm wide at its upper edge, 1.99mm thick at its midpoint and weighs 3.01g.

C.f LANCUM-6DD257 and GLO-14C6A5 on the PAS database, for two parallel strap ends of almost identical form.
