Medieval copper alloy shield-shaped harness stud, presumably with an integral circular-sectioned shank on the reverse, however, the shank is not visible as it has been inserted into an iron bar. The horizontally set bar projects to one side (to sinister), is rectangular-sectioned, with a slightly ovoid expansion where attached to the stud and with slightly concave sides flaring to a break (extant length 42mm, width 18mm, thickness 7mm). The decoration on the face of the shield is greatly obscured by corrosion and loss. There is a suggestion of a possible bend or a charge set bendwise, and a chief, enamel missing from the field with three mullets of six points ?Or/?Argent pierced of the field. Height 29.5mm. Width 26mm. 2mm thick. Later 13th - 14th century.
