A post-medieval copper alloy cast spherical bell dating from about AD 1600 - 1850. The object is spherical with a rectangular loop at the top. The pea is still present within the bell. There is a circumferential ridge separating the two hemispheres. The upper hemisphere has two opposing circular sound holes, with no decoration present. The lower hemisphere has a sound slit with a sound hole at either end. The lower hemisphere is decorated with a sunburst design. A maker's mark with the initials WG, is located on one side of the sound slit on the lower hemisphere. This possibly relates to William Gwynn of Aldbourne in Wiltshire, who was active from AD 1770 - 1813, though the foundry may have been in use for much longer. On the other side of the sound slit is a design of three radiating wedge shapes. The initials appears to be incised. The bell has a dark grey patina. The bell is 46.8mm long, 36.5mm diameter and 14.9g. The attachment loop is 12.7mm tall and was cast using a separate sprue piece, a technique developed in the 17th century.
