An early early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon, c. 450-550), copper alloy button brooch of Suzuki's class C, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin and has probable (though not apparent) damage to the pin lug. Traces of gilding are visible to the front of the brooch.
The brooch comprises a circular base with angled walls (turned outwards) surrounding it. The base depicts an anthropomorphic face within a concentric raised rib, a central T-shape to represent the nose and brow ridge, and a broad inverted-V below to represent a moustache. Below and flanking this latter element is a narrow rib and the base of the face. To either side of the trunk of the T-shape a triangular raised eye sits in the corner with the cross-bar of the T-shape. Filling the rest of the area are three diagonal raised ribs. Above the cross-bar of the T-shape is an elongated crescentic area representing the top of the head.
To the reverse a rectangular lug (5.1x2.3mm) projects 3.6mm at 10 o'clock; the catchplate (which curls almost all the way to the brooch reverse) measures 5.5x6.5x3.4mm and is situated at 4 o'clock.
The brooch measures 21.9x21.1mm at the top of walls, 17.5x16.7mm at the base of the walls inside and 20.3x18.3mm to the reverse. It stands 7.2mm high, the walls being 3.9mm high, and weighs 6.73g.

Notes:

Button brooches are distinguished by their small size and by the anthropomorphic face-masks which they feature. They may have been used in different ways as dress fasteners. It is thought that they may have been used singly rather than in pairs like the similar but larger saucer brooches. Button brooches are found throughout much of southern England and date between the later fifth and mid-sixth centuries.
Of this example, Seiichi Suzuki comments 'It looks like an earlier item of type C, in light of a less stylized design, somewhat similar to the find from Petersfield, Hampshire. What seems to be unique for this brooch is its rounded, smooth helmet. Normally, type C objects have their helmets provided with horizontal lines'.
