MOUNT

Unique ID: HAMP-F46E8E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A rather worn Roman copper-alloy rectangular mount, or perhaps knife handle, with red enamel decoration. The object takes the form of a rectangular bar, flat but with slightly thickened edges on both faces, giving an H-shaped cross-section. From one short edge a rectangular lip extends with a corner missing. The object measures 48.0mm in length, 12.2mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 6.96g. Due to its state of wear, it is uncertain whether the object is complete or not.

The upper face is split into decorative cells, some of which retain red enamel. Along the centre are four lozenge-shaped cells with a half-lozenge at either end. Above and below, resultant smaller triangles occupy the space between the lozenges and the thickened outer edge. Enamel now red in colour survives in four of the sixteen cells. The reverse of the item has a light green patina and ridged edges (more pronounced than to the other face), but has no discernible decoration.

It is uncertain what the function of this item is, although Sally Worrell (pers. comm. July 2018) notes that it is similar to DUR-F31E57, stating that "No doubt is it Roman, but the method of attachment is unknown."
