A fragment from the handle of a large vessel, probably an amphora, of Roman date (AD c. 43 - c. 200). The handle has been formed by the pressing together of two long cylinders of clay, to form a thick handle with a deep groove on either side. One side is slightly flattened, creating a B shaped cross-section. There is only a very slight longditudinal curvature to the fragment, suggesting it came from a long-handled form. Both ends terminate in irregular breaks, There is a slight inward curve at one end, but with no clear indication of the angle of attachment. The fabric is orange-pink throughout, with abundant angular inculsions of quartz and micas, some feldspar and darker grains up to 3mm.
Overall length 95 mm, width 54.5 mm, thickness 28.6 mm. Weight 18.8 g
