STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: SF-B63CBB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting dating to the late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 100 BC-100 AD. It consists a plano-convex sectioned circular hoop that thickens at its base-where there is a vertical sub-rectangular slot. Projecting above this slot is a circular 'button' like projection, its sides decorated with moulded transverse collars and its upper surface demonstrating a small circular aperture at its midpoint that originally would have served to attach an enamel cell via means of a circular-sectioned rivet. Preserved in good condition with an overall dark green patina, it measures 22.75mm in length, 25.21mm wide at its widest point, 4.64mm thick at the midpoint of the frame, 9.28mm thick at the projecting button and weighs 8.72g.

A number of fairly similar strap fittings have been recorded on the PAS database, see records LIN-901115 and DENO-BF7297. However, the closest match can be found in record SWYOR-29F8A6. Their resemblance to IA/Rb stud-and-loop type fasteners is notable.
