A possibly miscast or damaged Early Medieval lead spindle whorl, probably of Walton Rogers form A1, dating from about AD 500 - 900. It has a rounded lower surface and a flat upper face, but the damage makes the original shape hard to identify with certainty. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 8.5mm. There is no decoration. The whorl is 33.1mm in diameter and 7.2mm thick. It weighs 29.28gm.
This type of spindle whorl is illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25. Form A1 was used from AD 500 - 1100, but the size of the central aperture makes an Early to Middle Anglo-Saxon date more likely.
