A cast lead alloy Early Medieval to Medieval spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers type B1, dating from about AD 900 - 1200. It is of rectangular section, with flat upper and lower surfaces and vertical sides. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 10.9mm. There is no decoration. There is some slight damage in the form of a small edge chip. The whorl has a mid-grey crazed patina. It is 34mm in diameter and 6.2mm thick. It weighs 28.77gm.
This type of spindle whorl is illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25.
