Roman copper alloy pin of Cool's (1990) Group 1E dating to the period c. AD 43 - 409. Biconical head, now heavily worn. The shaft is tapering, but is slightly swollen in the centre and is bent at an obtuse angle just below the sweling. The tip is tightly curled.
Cool (1990, fig.1, no.3) illustrates a very similar example, which also has a swollen shaft and belongs to her Group 1E (knob heads with swollen shafts), which is concentrated in East Anglia. Although she lists no precise parallels from dated contexts, Cool (ibid., 154) suggests that pins with knob heads were in use throughout the Roman period although may have gained popularity later in the period.
