A fragment of a ceramic vessel of Roman date, c.AD 100 - 200. The vessel is a base sherd from a local (unsourced) miscellaneous greyware dish/vessel, with a burnished exterior surface. The fabric is fine and sandy with a smooth feel. The interior surface is a pale grey colour with a slightly darker grey core.
The sherd is 113.6mm x 47.8mm x 9.9mm. Weight: 88g. Overall diameter of base: 12cm (projected using rim chart); approx.35% remaining.
'Greyware' describes various types of locally produced pottery that were made in many different areas of Britain. They are one of the most common type of pottery found on Roman sites in Britain.
