Copper alloy strap end. A wide strap end made by the joining of two rectangular plates of thickness 1.7mm and 0.7mm, and subsequently by the cutting and rubbing down of their corners and of one end to produce a near-circular form. A pair of rivets of diameter 3.5mm and maximum length c.5mm attached the plates to each other and to the strap [lost]. The surface is heavily glossed, probably by continuous contact with fabric. A dense cluster of tiny [length c.1mm] nicks or punch marks appears centrally on either side. The fixing is accomplished by riveting, a medieval trait, but the wide strap points to the later part of that date-range. Dark material trapped between the plates may be preserved leather. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1400-1500.
