A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is shield shaped and has a raised shield shaped area on the front, but any design is now illegible. There is an unusually shaped depression in the centre of the reverse, which may be the remains of a authentication mark. There is also a patch or iron corrosion near the lower point on the reverse, and a magnet suggests there is an iron plug here, possible to fine tune the weight. The weight has a mass of 219gm (7 3/4oz) so was probably intended as an 8oz weight. It has, however suffered some damage; there is a groove across the top edge, probably resulting from contact with agricultural machinery, so it may have been a little heavier. The weight is 54.4mm long, 41mm wide and 18.5mm thick.
Similar weights are discussed and illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 34 - 40, and see page 302 of The Medieval Household. Compare also SWYOR-308CC.
