An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval barrel padlock dating from the 12th-16th century.
The case is rectangular in section with flat ends and bulges around middle. One end of the case has a rectangular slot for the key and at the other end the rectangular aperture is divided into two by an internal bar. This would have taken the spring mechanism, a detachable portion that would have had an integrally cast, flat projection, terminating in the loop to hold the point of the padlock pin. Above the key slot on thr top face is an integrally cast projection or tab that has the stub of the forward pointing pin. This projection has a circular perforation near the base.
The reverse has an etched fleur de lis motif in the central rounded portion of the lock and an incised border running top to bottom along the edge of the padlock. On the sides is a raised ridge flanking the rounded area of the padlock.
