An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are near complete with flat and pierced end cap. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The spring was probably formed of copper alloy wire which was held in place by an external cord which is fixed to a rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. The head of the brooch bow is hump like - being comma shaped in profile. The bow is D shaped in cross section. It extends to a broken edge on the lower bow. The catch-plate is formed from a rib on the rear of the bow which starts at the mid-point of the bow. The catchplate, foot and the pin rest are all lost. The surface of the brooch has distinct laminating corrosion which at present seems relatively stable. All of the original decoration is lost due to corrosion, The brooch is a mid - light brown colour with an even but abraded patina. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches and Bayley and Butcher: Roman Brooches in Britain.

The brooch measures 21.5mm length, is 18.5mm width across wings, 4.5mm width across bow, is 3.2mm thick across the bow (at the same point). It weighs 3.70 grams.
