A decorated lead spindle whorl, probably of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is biconvex and of Walton Rogers Form C. The decoration on both sides consists of radiating ribs. The whorl has a light grey patina. It is 26.2mm in diameter and 8.5mm thick. it weighs 24.17gm. The central aperture is 9.7mm diameter.

The Finds Recording Guide (Geake, 2001, unpublished, page 64) notes that decorated whorls are very difficult to date having been found in Medieval contexts but also in the vicinity of Roman buildings. They continued in use until at least AD 1500, and later in some parts of the country. Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicules) suggests that biconical whorls date from AD 1100 onwards and cites Ivens et al (1995) that those with dots are Post Medieval.
