A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative intial T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 50-100. The surviving portion comprises of the head and upper bow.

At the head of the brooch the wings survive to a width of 29.7mm, these are cylindrical; retaining a copper alloy axis bar in situ, and with a sub-recatngular slot cut into the reverse to accomodate a hinged pin, the perforated lug of which survives. The wings are c. 4.1mm in diameter, with 3 parallel longitudinal incised grooves at either wing tip. The bow projects from the head with a width of 12.0mm, and is very broadly plano-convex in cross-section, c. 4.4mm thick, tapering into a worn break. The front of the bow is cast into a series of converging ribs, forming two nested V-shapes surrounding a central crest. The bow is flanked by two further flanged ribs, which terminate shortly after the bow projects outwards.

Dimensions: length 25.0mm; width 29.7mm; thickness 4.4mm; weight 5.63g.

The form, simple relief cast decoration and lack of head loop all suggest an identification as an Initial T-shaped brooch, dated to the Flavian period by Bayley & Butcher (2004). Mackreth (2011: plt. 62) illustrates a number of similar brooches, cf. also similar examples on this database, including: SOM-B8ED51, SOM-6EC98C, SOM-BC01A8.
