UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SWYOR-B99868

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete, cast copper-alloy unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date, AD 1500 - 1900. It consists of two arms, both 5.5mm wide and 2.5mm thick. They meet at a right angle. Both are incomplete, but one extends for 14mm before bending down at a right-angle and continuing for 16mm before the worn patinated break. The other one is shorter and does not bend. A narrow curved bar of metal joins them across the internal angle of the right angle, leaving a sub-circular hole of 3.6mm by 3.8mm. A third, narrower are projects from the corner of the two main arms, but is also broken, extending just 5mm. There is no decoration. The object has a patchy, light green patina. It is 43.3 long, 23.3mm wide and 3.2mm thick. It weighs 4.76gm.

Initially assumed to be a lamp hanger like those discussed in Egan, 2010, The Medieval Household: Daily Living c.1150 - c.1450, pages 130 - 133 and database records LANCUM-6D0215, SF-9CC0D5 and SUR-96BBE1, it is noted that the shape is not correct for these. It is also similar to but differetn from servant's bell mechanisms. Currently, this object is unidentified, but the metal and patina suggests a Post medieval date.
