A lead perforated weight of probably Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1500 - 1900. It is flat and rectangular in section, and an elongated octagon in plan. There is a keyhole shaped hole through the weight at one end (rounded at one end and narrower and rectangonal at the other); it is not clear whether it was always intended to be this shape, or whether it has been worn by suspension on a loop or rope. The edges and corners of the weight are worn and rounded. This may be from water damage, since the weight was found near a river. This has led to speculation that the weight may have been used on a boat or for weighing down a net as a net sinker. Unfortunately, no close parallel has been recorded on the PAS database, though LANCUM-FF7043 is an example of a net sinker in stone. It has a grey patina with dark brown colouration in any dimples. It is 129.2mm long, 80.7mm wide and 28mm thick. 1557g. The form is similar to NLM-55EB01 which speculates use as an agricultural machinery weight.
