The fragment is 22.5 mm in length, 21 mm in width, 0.5 mm in thickness and weighs 2.35 g. It consists of approximately two-thirds of the distal end of the bowl of a spoon, which has been torn leaving no trace of its attachment to the stem. The fragment is corroded on both faces with pitting to the inner, concave face. One edge still retains its original curve, despite slight damage, but the opposite edge is more damaged. Originally the bowl would have been an elongated tear shape. Although fragmentary, the bowl closely resembles three Roman spoon bowls found in Cornwall recorded on the database: CORN-1C9334 and CORN-1BE7B3, both at Sancreed, and CORN-C3F239 at Wendron.
Crummy (1983) illustrates a copper alloy spoon bowl excavated from Roman contexts at Colchester with similar proportions and a tear-shaped bowl on page 70, fig.73, no.2012, that appears to have been in production by the first half of the 2nd century.
Bishop (1996) illustrates a similar spoon with an elongated bowl and a flat stem, from Roman Aldborough, on page 13, fig.7, no.25.2018-06-20 23:01:462018-06-21 12:13:30412018-05-112018-05-141Certain11132121PAS5B2ACECA0012F17111CORNCopper alloy10627CastFragmentCorrodedROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsMetal detectorCircaCirca90593643750244794375041427SW6728SW6728SW68NE50.10627548-5.2598921011017724DSCN6408.JPG787176spoon bowl (front)Royal Institution of Cornwall4images/atyacke/South WestDisturbedGrassland, HeathlandEuropean RegionUnitary AuthorityCornwallUnitary AuthorityCornwallCivil Parish50.1496-5.22971WendronReturned to finder96805
