BROOCH

Unique ID: CORN-A467BE

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete cast copper alloy Western variant of a Roman Colchester derivative hinged brooch. One wing has partially broken off and most of the lower part of the brooch is missing, along with the foot, catchplate and pin. The arms are hollow, tubular to hold the axial bar for the hinge, and quite wide in proportion to the size of the brooch. The one complete arm has an expanded bulbous terminal with a flattened end. The head of the brooch is notched to hold the hinge for the pin. There is a fragment of the hinge mechanism remaining below the slot in the hollow back of the bow. The upper bow of the brooch is wide and flat and undecorated apart from an annulet punched in the centre of the bow. Found close to another Roman brooch recorded in record CORN-FBFE77.

Butcher (Cornish Archaeology 53, 2014, p.6, fig.5, no.5) illustrates a similar brooch from Nornour with a wide head, minimal decoration, expanded arms and the pin housed in a narrow tube, and describes it as a western version of a Colchester derivative. One such example is described as 'not later than Flavian'.

A similar example of a Roman brooch with wings with expanded bulbous terminals is recorded in SOMDOR-22DD41
