An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch, dating to the period c.AD 200-350. The brooch is oval in plan with a raised oval rim around a recessed cell at its centre, which would have held a stone or coloured glass insert. There is traces of gilding around the outer rim but the brooch is too worn to discern any incised or moulded decoration around this area. The reverse of the brooch retains the hooked catchplate and most of the single lug for the pin. Around these two elements is the remains of a white metal (silver) coating.
Plate brooches usually date to the second and third centuries, while 'centre boss' types are thought to be slightly later, to the third if not the fourth century (Bayley & Butcher, 2004, p.178). A similar example can be found in Hattatt (2000) fig 223 no. 1213.
