FINGER RING

Unique ID: DUR-7D1FB7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: A complete Posie or Posy finger ring, with plain band and interior Roman script ' inscription, dating to the mid post-medieval period (c. AD1600-1700).

The ring is 'D' shaped in section with a plain convex outer band. The ring is slightly misshapen, and is thus sub-oval in plan. Around the inner band is inscribed the legend: 'love as I or else die' in crude italic lettering.

Discussion: The inscription is listed in Evans (1931, 72) with three variations of spelling ('elce' and 'dye'). Of these, one is drawn from the British Museum collections (Museum number AF.1335), dated to 1724 based on an approximate date taken from a mourning ring with the same makers mark. The style of inscribed lettering of the ring described above would indicate a slightly earlier date, possibly in the mid 17th century - see for example illustrations from 17th century books in Whalley (1980, 221-227).

Dimensions: 19.53mm long, 17.55mm wide, 1.96mm high, 0.92mm band thickness, 1.1g in weight.

Notes: This item qualifies as Treasure under the criteria of the 1996 Treasure Act, being more than 300 years old and containing in excess of 10% precious metal. Treasure number: 2018-T428
