Object type certainty: Certain

A lead musket ball dating to the post-medieval period c.17th-19th centuries.

Description: The musket ball is spherecal and appears to have a sprue scar remaining as well as distinct 'flash' visible along the mould line. Likely this was caused by the two mould halves having been poorly seated. Normally lost through bumping in transport or through use, here it is intact, suggesting the bullet was found close to its point of manufacture and was never fired.

Measurements: 16.68mm in diameter and 22.3g in weight

Discussion: This musket ball likely comes from a musket with a bore similar to a Dragoon Musket or Bastard Musket in use during the 17th century (Foard 2009). Due the variation in bore for arms in private hands it is not possible to be certain this musket ball comes from the weapons referenced, although a 17th century or later date is likely.
