BUCKLE

Unique ID: LIN-ADFF24

Object type certainty: Certain

A copper-alloy buckle plate, rectangular in shape measuring 18mm in length by 13mm in width. It has two rivet holes, one near to each corner at the attachment end; one has a rivet surviving in it which is attached to a piece of copper-alloy sheet which is complete and runs behind the back face of the buckle plate. It is clear than none of the other holes were intended as rivet holes, since there are only two perforations in the back sheet of the plate. The front face is decorated with an open work design, consisting of a left facing winged, two-legged beast with a dragon-like head and a fish-like tail. The beast has been defined by circular perforations around its edges. The face is bordered with a rope-like pattern. There are two broken arms for attachment to the buckle bar. A similar beast on a buckle plate has been found in London although without the open work design and in Kings Lynn with the open work design, the latter example has been dated to the early 13th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 113-114, Fig 73, No 530). Another parallel comes from Fressingfield in Suffolk, and is recorded on the Portable Antiquities database as SF10663.
