BUCKLE

Unique ID: CORN-2518AB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper-alloy double-loop sub-annular buckle which is oval in plan and convex in section with a bevelled underside. The pin bar is inset from the front of the frame and surrounded by iron corrosion product from the iron pin which is now missing. The chape is also missing but would also have been attached to the pin bar. The surface of the frame has a good dark green patina and patches of black lacquer which would have protected the buckle from corroding. The buckle is 22.7 mm long, 19 mm wide, 3 mm in height and 2 mm thick.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates examples of similar buckles on p.49, no.283, dating from c.1650-1720.
