COIN

Unique ID: PUBLIC-24D3C1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper-alloy coin of Roman date. A radiate coin of Carausius dating to the period AD 286-293 (Reece Period 14). The Reverse legend is unclear, but appears to be LEG (VICTRIX?) with a boar standing right. This suggests it was struck for Legio VI Victrix, but the die engraver has conflated the numeral VI with the first two letters of VICTRIX. London mint, - // ML. RIC - . This is the only coin known of its type and Legio VI only has two other known coins which honour it in Carausius' reign. This is a very important piece and it is hoped a slightly clearer specimen will be found in the future. This coin is included in Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.
