A near complete cast gilt copper-alloy (Kentish) small square-headed brooch of Early-Medieval date c. 500-575.

Description: The brooch has a small square head with a central upright running bar panel, within double border cast in relief.er. There is a slight flat flange running around the outside of the head. The bow is low and formed of a double plain panel with raised edges and a central ridge. The foot is expanded tapering in outline towards the terminal forming a diamond shape with a central lozenge-shaped relief enclosing a raised pellet. In the upper angles of the foot-plate are rudimentary Style I animal heads, formed from downward facing curls. The foot is formed from a small rectangular piece with no decoration on. The reverse is undecorated and has a complete pin loop and catch plate, although the pin is entirely absent. The foot is bent over slightly. The brooch has a dark brown patina with mottle green areas as well as substantial areas of gold gilding remaining

Measurements: 29.87mm long, 13.32mm wide, 8.63mm thick and 4.24g in weight.

Discussion: This brooch is of small 'Kentish' square-headed type, likely dating to the period c. AD 475-575, the zoomorphic designs likely push it into the 6th century however. Three other examples have been reported to the PAS with very similar decorative elements, KENT-468034, BERK-051CDB and HAMP1796.
