Unique ID: KENT-1A19A5

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative brooch of double-pierced lug type, dating 43-100 AD.

Description: The humped bow has a raised ridge running along its' centre and an undecorated flat underside. The brooch foot and catch plate is missing entirely, this part of the brooch having broken off in antiquity as the break is patinated and worn. The wings are shallow crescents in cross section and holds the intact spring for the now mostly missing pin which remains only as a stub. The axis bar remains in situ through the lug, although distorted and is still attached to the spring. The brooch is patinated light green colour typical of copper-alloy, while the pin remains a dark brown.

Measurements: 28.2mm long, 24.26mm wide. 12.79mm high and 8g in weight.

Discussion: Similar brooches are recorded from Hacheston, Suffolk (Plouviez 2004, 95-97, fig. 64), Hattat, 2000 Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, (2000), fig. 157 nos. 1508, 885 and 888. As well as being well attested on the PAS database: see, for example:KENT-2CBC29and ESS-C50EF7.

Class: Colchester derivative, double pierced lug, Harlow type
