FINGER RING

Unique ID: PUBLIC-194333

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Post-Medieval gold iinscribed finger-ring, of 'Posy' type..

Description: The ring is formed from a thin hoop, with a convex outer face. The innermost face is engraved with a saying, motto or message in lower case does read 'God above increase our love'. There is also a makers mark of 'DF' in blackletter stamped on the inner band after the motto. The outside of the hoop is undeccorated. The hoop is now roughly ovoid due to post-depositional damage.

Measurements: 26.23mm x 14.91mm, 3.41mm wide, 1.00mm thick and 3.08g in weight

Discussion: The use of lower case lettering and its thin band suggests a c.18th century date as KENT-9CDF6B. This coupled with a maker's mark not known or listed anywhere, it is not therefore possible to assign a date prior to 1718. Thus the ring does not qualify as treasure as it cannot be comfortable dated to before 1718.
