SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: CORN-049956

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A late Medieval cast copper alloy personal 'tall handle' seal matrix with a handle that is hexagonal in cross section and a die that is circular in plan. The die is slightly damaged around the perimeter and is 15.5 mm in diameter. Its length or height to the tip of the broken handle, where the suspension loop is missing, is 12.5 mm and the weight 5.2 g. The device on the die is the head of a lion growling with outward-curled lips and its hair on end on either side of small ears, surrounded by lombardic lettering:

* PRIVE SVE or 'personal seal'

Seals of this type bearing animal designs are sometimes known as rebus seals as they may be puns referring to the bearer's name or occupation.

Harvey and McGuinness (1996) note that personal seals of this size and type with animal motifs can be dated after 1300 and illustrate two seals of this period on pages 88-89, nos.80 & 82.

McEwan & New (2012) illustrate a similar circular seal with a hawk as the central device within the inscription: PRIVE SVEAME on page 47, fig.19, Seal 1, which is dated from 1338.

Inscription: *PRIVE SVE
