Incomplete copper alloy early Saxon pin. Long tapering triangular-shaped flat head with a straight sided shaft, bent and broken at its thin end. Unusually the pin is wrought. The shaft has either been partially rolled or the edges of both long sides have been hammered-in. Either way a central gully has been formed on each face. The wide upper flat part at the head of the pin has a central circular suspension hole with a triangular notch missing through damage to the adjacent side. Decoration is engraved on both faces of the pin head consisting of a series of transverse lines set with two saltire crosses within, one above the other. The entire square end of the pin has multiple perpendicular grooves on both faces giving it a serrated profile. Closest parallel is Ross class XV.i.a Spatulate-expanded-headed-sub-triangular type. Circa 6th century AD.
