An incomplete Medieval copper alloy 'locking buckle', dating to c. AD 1350-1450. Comprising of a double-looped, asymetrical rectangular buckle frame, with an off-centre expansion in profile, perforated to accomodate a separate copper alloy spindle. The outside edge of the larger loop is expanded, with a central croove forming a pin rest. The pin comprises of a cylindrical chape, through which the sindle is fed, with an integral triangular projection forming the pin. Projecting beyond the frame the spindle forms part of a larger 'U-shaped' arm, which has been bent in slightly and its terminal section is missing. The buckle is otherwise complete.

Dimensions of frame: 27 mm wide mm x 16 mm high x 5.0 mm thick.
Overall dimensions: 31 mm high x 27 mm wide x 5.0mm thick. Weight 7.05 gm.

Similar buckles can be seen published by Ward-Perkins (1940: plate LXXVII, nos. 10-11), whilst another, although lacking its arm, is published by Egan & Pritchard (2002: 97, no. 445), from a context dating to c. AD 1350-1400. They are thought to have been used to hold a purse or knife (ibid).
