A cast lead object, probably a post medieval palm-guard. The object is plano-convex and semi-piriform in shape. The tip is bent upwards, probably this is recent damage as there is a gouge showing the metallic colour of the lead . The rest of the surface is dull dark grey or has a dusty buff patina. The shape of the object allows it to fit in the palm of the hand. Such a palm guard would have been used by leather workers to protect the hand when forcing pointed tools through heavy duty textile or leather, and there is a deep and apparently old (from the patina) scratch on the flat surface consistent with this use. Palm guards were in use for a long period and so are difficult to date with precision (c. 1500 - c. 1800)
