Complete copper-alloy gaming piece or weight of uncertain date, probably within the range c. 1000 - 1600 AD. The object is a thick disc with a cross pattee incised in the centre of one face and a ring and dot pattern on the other face. Gold flecks on both sides belie that it was once gilded. The object is very worn and corroded and much of the original surface has been lost. It is dark brown in colour, with patches of dark green. The object is 21.68mm in diameter, 5.10mm in thickness and weighs 12.69g.

Ring and dot is a decorative motif that remained popular from the Iron Age to the Post-medieval period and cannot be used to date objects, although it is strongly associated with the early medieval period and is frequently found on Anglo-Scandinavian gaming pieces such as YORYM-B4D1A3 (see ASHM-383087 for a Roman example). Certainly, the form of the object under discussion has parallels among objects that are recorded as gaming pieces and weights and may have encompassed a variety of functions; examples are dated from the early medieval to the medieval period: SOM-F2FC45, IOW-BACA51 and NMS-0B2844. The cross pattee on this example points to a medieval rather than an early medieval date, suggestive as it is of the design on the reverse of medieval coins.
