A complete cast copper alloy crotal (animal) bell of post medieval date, possibly made by William Gwynn (1770 -1813). The bell is composed of two hemispherical halves with a circumferential joint line. The lower hemisphere has a sound slit and is decorated with an incised sunpurst pattern radiating from a double circle at the bottom, which encloses a trefoil on one side of the sound slit and initials on the other side. The second initial is a G, whihc suggests the maker was William Gwynn (Blunt 2005). The upper hemisphere is undecorated and has two circular holes (these function as sound holes but may have also formed part of the casting process). There is an integrally cast suspension lug, rectangular in shape with a wide (7.9 mm) integrally cast hole. The 'pea' is still in place within the bell.
Diameter 35.6 mm, thickness at lug 4.4 mm. Weight 45 g.
