~~Copper alloy hollow cast Early Medieval sword pommel dated to AD 900-1050. This is broadly triangular in plan with a base that is slightly curved. The upper portion is shaped into five lobes that increase in width and height to the central lobe which has a much wider and more rounded cross-section than its counterparts. Dividing each of the lobs from its neighbour by is a narrow band with recessed borders.
The lower section of the pommel is defined by a double plan band that runs the circumference of the item, the lower band is slightly wider than the one above.
The tang would have passed through a central positioned rectangular slot in the base (17mm long by 6mm wide) and through a corresponding slot in the top (15mm long by 4mm wide). There is a large circular hole to one end of the upper tang slot and a second hole in the centre of one side.
This pommel is a fusion of Anglo-Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon fashions and fits within Wheelers (1927) type VI, Petersen (1919) type Lv 'variant' forms.
