A lead papal bulla of Pope Urban IV (AD 1261 - 1264). The obverse has a pelleted border, and has the raised letters VR/BANVS / PP IIII. PP stands for 'pastor pastorum'. The reverse has a pelleted border. Within are two bearded heads each enclosed in an elipse of pellets, either side of a cruciform sword. The heads represent Saints Peter and Paul, indicated by the abreciations SPA and SPE above the heads.
A bulla such as this would serve to seal and authenticate papal documents.
The bulla has a bend creating a crease line running dametrically across the obverse from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. This follows the line of the attachment cord and is probably not deliberate defacement.
Diameter is 38.7 mm, thickness 4.4 mm. Weight 37.4 g
