Medieval lead alloy bag shaped ampulla, 55mm long, 31mm wide and 7mm thick with a weight of 43.32g.
The ampulla is rectangular in form and cross section, with a rounded lower edge and a rectangular upper edge. It has the remains of a triangular lug, one at each side, about halfway down. On one side the decoration consists of a scallop shell design on its lower side and a possible raised letter A in the centre of its upper side. The other side has a raised solid border which is rounded on the lower side and rectangular? on its upper. Outside of this there is hatching running across the bevelled edge to the casting seam. Inside the circular border is what appears to be a reversed lombardic T or a spiral? with three short lines projecting from its rounded sdge (right as shown). This sits in a field of cross hatching. Above this it appears to form two raised straight lines running from the motif towards the top with raised diagonal ones projecting from the left hand line and a possible cross motif at its top? Its difficult to see due to damage on the surface.
The ampulla may possibly fit Spencer's Type II, representing St Thomas of Canterbury?
