An incomplete, copper alloy Roman brooch of the knee brooch type, dating from about AD 150 - 250. It has a semi-circular head plate decorated with a curved band of orange enamel round the outer edge, and possible pale green enamel on the rest of the plate. Behind the head are two incomplete loops to hold the sping, which is missing. The bow is faceted and quite sturdy. The catchplate is incomplete but vertical. The brooch is 43.9mm long, 25mm wide and 26.4mm thick. It weighs 16.56gm.
Compare NLM-1CBEFC and LANCUM-DA511C which cites Bayley and Butcher (2004, 179) who note that after a period of perhaps a century where locally produced brooches supplied the British market, knee brooches are the first of the more general continental types seen in Britain.
