A complete iron axe-like object of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1800. The object is sub-rectangular in plan with an expanded blade with a pronounced downward projection. Much of the original cutting edge has been lost to degradation though it appears to have had a gentle curve. The butt end of the axe is sub-triangular in plan and no socket is present.
The metal has a mid-orangey-brown patina and is heavily corroded. The object is 216.8mm long, 138.9mm wide at the blade, 69.4mm wide at the socket, 4.8mm thick at the blade, 38.1mm thick at the socket.
While the form of this object resembles an axe of the bearded type the lack of socket means it would not have functioned as such. The object may therefore be a stone chisel or splitting wedge.
