A complete cast iron probable shot or cannon ball dating from the post-medieval period, about AD 1500-1700. It is a sphere of iron, with a slightly pited and corroded surface, dark brown in colour. It is 39.5mm diameter (1,5 inches) and has a mass of 235g (eight and a quarter ounces). It may have been itended for use in a Serpentine cannon which had a nominal bore size of 1.5 inch diameter, firing shot weighing 0.75 lb, or a Rabinet cannon which fired shot weighing 8oz. Corrosion may have altered the size and weight of this example. Compare SOM-A0A8A2 which cites Blackmore (1990) Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, Royal Armouries, p. 83.

Light cannon were developed in the late 15th century, but this is likely to date from the English Civil War if it is a cannon ball. It is also possible that the object is some form of ball bearing or a ball from a crushing mill.
