Copper alloy and glass locket fragment. An oval plano-convex orange glass stone with the relicts of a deeply incised and detailed bust in the style of a Classical intaglio, retained within an oval frame. Only the luxuriant wavy hair and bare shoulder of the subject now remain, the face having been carried away when the stone was broken. The frame is of two parts: a rounded concavo-convex sheath for the stone with external radial ribbed decoration; and a separate framing outer order with three grooves which follow its course. The inner edge of this component matched a counterpart on the lost lid or half of the locket; the latter suggestion envisages a pair of busts configured to regard each other when the locket was opened. Both parts of the frame retain traces of gilding traces. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850.
