A ribbed copper alloy clip or hook, possibly a shield binding clip dating from the Iron Age or Roman periods, about 300 BC - AD 100. It is rectangular in plan and U shaped in cross-section, and the inner face is also curved longitudinally, to allow it to fit snugly when clipped on to the inside of something rounded and curved such as a ring. The outer face is ribbed with four ridges. The short ends of the clip appear to be complete. The long edges are both broken, but one is also champfered. It has a smooth light grey green patina. It is 23.6mm long, 15.1mm wide and 12.9mm thick. 12.63g.

The binding clip is similar to one published in Parfitt (1995) Iron Age Burials from Mill Hill, Deal, British Museum Press and to examples recorded on the database such as LANCUM-48E298 and SWYOR-09BA81 which could also be from a tankard. However, it is also similar to Bronze Age cauldron handle escutcheons or attachment clamps of which a very good example (but larger) is SF-832744. See also SUR-30F173 and SUSS-8438EC.
